I just bought a Stevens 620 today. I've looked for a date of manufacture with the serial number, but I've had no luck. The serial number is U74103. Any idea where I can find this information?

You can't. The No. 620 was introduced in 1927, and manufactured into the 1950s. The J. Stevens Arms Co. serial number info is long gone and even the Savage Arms Corp. historian can't tell you. You can narrow it down somewhat by the features and markings on the guns. The earliest No. 620s had the lever safety inside the trigger guard. By 1930, the guns got the cross-bolt safety behind the trigger. If the gun is marked J. Stevens Arms Co., it was made 1946 or earlier. Savage Arms Corp. 1947 to 1954, and they began calling it the Model 620. For most of its production life the 620s had a checkered stock and forearm, but in the 1950s they went to a ringed forearm and the last year the Model 620 was offered it had a larger ringed forearm, like on the replacement Model 77.

Hmm. Interesting, thank you. The receiver is marked 'J Stevens', it has a checkered stock, ringed fore end, and a cross bolt safety. The numbers all match.
I'm guessing there's no value in the gun.

A Stevens Model 620 marked J. Stevens Arms Company was made between 1927 and 1940.
12 gauge model 620's have sold recently on www.gunbrlkeer between $100 and $225. 20 gauge guns will bring a premium.

Well good. I wanted a project for refinishing, so this is a good piece.

This is my research so far. It all started out when I was trying to find out what year my J. Steven Arms Co., Double Barrel, S x S, Model 335 Shotgun was made. I pretty quickly learned that there are no records available as they were reportedly destroyed in a fire. I decided to start collecting Serial Numbers to try to determine what year, or approx what year, my gun was made. Below is my list so far. I collected numbers that I felt were from reliable and accurate sources from around the internet. Not included were numbers that were too unclear and also numbers that had a Letter in front of it. I found a handfull of those and they still don't make any sense to me. Feel free to add any info and more reliable numbers to the list.
BTW, my number is 847XX. By my research it appears, so far anyway, that my gun was made in the mid 20's.
I also kept the last 2 numbers off the originals as I feel it serves no purpose in the research.
The more numbers we can add will help us all who are trying to determine the year of their gun, or as accurate as we can anyway.
J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co. (Aprrox 1910 to 1915):

Cowboy, I think you are riding a dead horse but good luck. Is there any way you can break those serial numbers down by gauges and years?

No, as far as I have learned, there was no difference on what Gauge they were. It seems like whichever one it was, went out the door using the same number order.
Also the Years is what the mystery is. Seeing that all the records were destroyed, it is the only way, that I know of anyway, to try to determine an approximate year of manufacture.
You mentioned 'dead horse', but not only am I having fun with it, my research has got my gun narrowed down to an approximate date, as of now anyway.
When I first got it, they told me it was an 'Early 1900's' and mentioned somewhere around the 'Turn of the Century', but it seems like I can safely say that it was made somewhere between 1922 and 1927, or basically Mid 20's.
The main problem with my research is that there's just not a whole lot of '335' owners around. I'll keep adding to the list now and then though.
Bill

I have an Eastern arms SxS 16 gauge. I have read countless forum threads and have viewed many, many, pictures of similar said guns.
The problem is that my gun is different from every other that I have seen.
For instance, I have serial numbers but no model number, I have a stamp on the outside bottom receiver but, its a circle with the number 22 in it only.....no letter, if I figure out how to post pictures I will shortly.

Congrats on a good start on your No. 335 research.
I began recording Ansley H. Fox Sterlingworth serial numbers back in 1989, when I was doing research at the Library of Congress on all things Fox, after work, and feeding my information to Mike McIntosh for his book on Ansley H. Fox and his shotguns.
My Sterlingworth tables have been a valuable resource over the years, providing many useful insights. If I see any No. 335s at the Winter Las Vegas Antique and Sporting Arms Show this weekend, I'll record them and send them along to you.
Good luck with your research.

That is what we need, but please start a new thread when asking a question about a different gun!!

Is it definitely a 'Model 335'?
As they made many different models (Model Number should be on the underside).

OK, this will be the first one I have found starting with the Number '6' which is exactly in-between the two year spans as shown above.
On the side of your gun does it say 'J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co' ?
or just 'J. Stevens Arms' ?

Your gun is now the newest one listed of the Pre-War guns. As of now we can pretty much say that it was made in or close to 1915. That number also fills the gap more to tell us that there was a continuation of the production numbers from Pre-War to Post-War.

Not sure if you are still collecting, but I just inherited a 335 16 gauge . This has now been passed down either 5 or 6 generations (not sure which great-nth originally purchased it). The first 3 of the serial are 968.
I know it was made after 1915 but that’s all I know.
Did your research help you narrow down any year ranges for the serial numbers?
